Rocco Mediate
It seems like just yesterday Rocco was elegantly bowing to Tiger Woods during the US Open. Well, now he has another great chance at the British Open! That’s right, as of current standing he shares the lead with 3 others.
Check out this highlight from a recent ESPN article:
“It was just one of those rounds,” said Mediate, 45, who has become something of a celebrity since taking Woods to a playoff at the U.S. Open and finally losing on the 91st hole. “It was just up and down and up and down and a couple of birdies, and here we are. I would have been ecstatic with 73 or 74 today. … I’m ecstatic with this one. This was a lot of fun.”
Truth is, Mediate wasn’t expecting much fun when he woke to the sounds of rain and wind. The temperature was in the low 50s, the wind gusted up to 25 mph and he saw his colleagues wearing wool caps.”

Rocco Mediate
If your just tuning we recently learned that tomorrow Monday June 16, 2008 our very own superstar golfer Rocco Mediate is set to duel Tiger Woods for the title of 2008 US Open Champion.
I just read an awesome article over at ESPN.com about Rocco’s suprise playoff against Tiger. It reads…
“Mediate, trying to become the oldest champion at age 45, two-putted for par from above the ridge for an even-par 71 to finish at 1-under 283, the first time since 2004 that someone broke par in a U.S. Open.”
One more awesome fact from this article…
” Monday will not be the first time they have tussled.
Mediate played with a 23-year-old Woods in the final round of the Phoenix Open in 1999, where he led by six shots and held on to win by three. It was one of his five PGA Tour victories. “Battle royale,” Mediate said of what awaits. “The thing that is most amazing is the man I’m going to play tomorrow has won 13 of these. It’s amazing how much it takes. I gave all I had today and I can’t complain.”"

Check out this amazing article about Rocco Mediate qualifying for the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines public golf course in California. The unique thing about this US open is that it is the second time it has been played in Southern California in the past 60years. We really couldn’t ask for a better course, Torrey Pines is the home of the Buick Invitational and is an amazing course. You should play it sometime, it will only set you back $250/per person! If you think that’s bad try playing the Wynn!
“Naples resident Rocco Mediate birdied the first playoff hole in Columbus, Ohio to advance through 36-hole sectional Monday for the 108th U.S. Open.” (Full Article)
Good job Rocco we wish you good luck in the 2008 US Open!

Let’s find out a little more about Rocco Mediate…

Now for his back story:
Mediate’s golfing career has been dogged by back trouble and he started using a long putter early on because of this.[citation needed] In 1991 he became the first player to win on the PGA Tour using a long putter when he won the Doral-Ryder Open. He picked up another victory at the 1993 KMart Greater Greensboro Open, but he then had a long layoff due to a ruptured disk.
Mediate returned to the Tour in 1996 playing under a special medical extension and performed steadily. He picked up wins on the Tour in 1999, 2000 and 2002. After improving his fitness to minimise his back problems, he returned to using a conventional putter in 2003.
He has featured in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Rankings. At the 2006 Masters, Mediate was in contention to win the event on the final day until he took a septuple-bogey ten on the par three 12th hole. Rocco held the lead for most of the 3rd round of the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and went into the final round in the second to last pairing.
